Who is Girl Tyler?

I’m a girl. Girls can be named Tyler. Call me Girl Tyler.

My name is Tyler Young and on paper, people assume that I am a white man.

Sorry to disappoint.

My future ambition is to be Norman Lear with melanin and breasts. I’m working harder than ever to become a TV writer.

My pilot script, “Remember the Time,” received a 7 on The Blcklist. If you’re a member, you can read it here. My feature, “Body Count,” advanced to the second round for consideration in Sundance’s 2020 Development Track.

I’m also a freelance Associate Producer and working on a new documentary (teaser coming soon).

I recently served as AP on a coming of age short film titled, “AFRO.”

For four years, I worked as a morning news producer in Charlotte, NC. Working in live TV is a beast…now I’m tackling the scripted world. (My blog is currently undergoing a major makeover, please excuse the mess!)

Maid of Autumn

I wrote and co-produced a short film, ‘Maid of Autumn’ with Courtney Stribling in Charlotte, NC. Check out the teaser and see a few behind the scenes photos below!

In 2017, I entered Color Creative + Talo Films’ Fresh Wave! competition. My pitch and pilot were selected landing me a spot as a semi-finalist in the competition. Out of 1,200 submissions, my script made it to the top 10.

Started the decade wanting to be a news reporter, ended the decade playing one in a movie on Netflix. You can’t put 10 years in 10 slides but to sum it up… 10 years ago, I was an anchor/reporter on our campus newscast. Two weeks before I graduated, my grandmother/my heartbeat, the reason why I pursued any of this passed away. 2010 was a DARK period. I couldn’t find a job in news. Started grad school. Quit grad school. Fast forward to 2012. Got that job in news. 2014, I had my own on-air segment. I worked full-time and started my freelance career. 2015 God told me “I have something greater for you,” so I resigned from local news. Freelance hustle hit a speed bump. Within 8 months, I was broke but NEVER saw a hungry day or had to beg for a single coin. Then I started doing extra / stand-in work on TV and film projects as well as PA work. I met Oprah! Issa Rae called me an “amazing writer.” @dubyah_d40 recorded it for me, idk what I did with the video ? I started being funny on Twitter and made it to the newspapers in the U.K. Ummmmm…some other things happened. @sherrell_dorsey took a chance on me. I worked alongside her brilliance for 2.5 years. Started working on scripted content. Made top 10 in a writing contest out of 2,000 submissions and made a few strides in a few other competitions. I wrote and produced a short film. Shot a pilot. Now I’m working on something new. God is good and His mercy is everlasting. Happy New Year ✌?
