Another year is in the books. 2014 presented some highs and lows for the black community. With all of the turmoil, we cannot enter the new year without reflecting on the enjoyable times, especially when it comes to pop culture and our black favorite celebrities doing their thing. I gathered a list of unforgettable moments of the year that are worth celebrating.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>DEAR WHITE PEOPLE SPARKS A CULTURAL PHENOMENON\"\"<\/span>

\n<\/span>White privilege is real. The comedy about racial perplexities, cultural differences and stereotypes all collide on a\u00a0fictitious college campus.\u00a0Dear White People\u00a0<\/i>sparked a conversation this year, particularly for millennials about today’s views on race. While the title sounds like an open letter to white people about their often seemingly rigid attitudes about race, the message also gave a renewed sense of the black pride movement.<\/span>

\n<\/span>SHONDA RHIMES MASSACRED THURSDAY NIGHTS<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>When is the last time a black woman created three highly rated dramas, on the same night airing on one of the “big three” networks. According to my history books, the answer is never. Shonda Rhimes has been at the center of conversation all year for her diverse\u00a0characters with dynamic plot twists that leaves you asking “how the hell did you come up with that”. Millions continue to \u00a0tune in for\u00a0Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal\u00a0<\/i>and newcomer,\u00a0How to Get Away with Murder.\u00a0<\/em>All three shows push the envelope with racy scenes\u00a0driven by strong female leads. Like the shows or not, mama is still getting paid.<\/span>

\n<\/span>LAVERNE COX FLAWLESSLY COVERS TIME MAG<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>You are likely living under a rock if you haven’t heard or watched snippets of\u00a0Orange is the New Black.\u00a0<\/i>Laverne Cox’s character, Sophia, is all diva living inside as a transgender person inside a women’s federal prison. Her on-screen struggles presented more attention to the complexities of transgender life. Because of her prominence as an actress and activist, Laverne became the first transgender to pose for the cover of\u00a0Time Magazine<\/a>.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Keke Palmer is no longer a child star with the witty one-liners, playing feisty\u00a0characters. Nowadays, the 21-year-old is busy playing the role of a lifetime; the first black Cinderella on Broadway. With that major accomplishment under her belt, Keke also managed to secure the title of “youngest talk show host” in BET’s\u00a0Just Keke<\/a>.\u00a0<\/i>The sky is definitely not her limit.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Introducing, the first billionaire in hip-hop. Who knew rap would ever take it this far? Dr. Dre’s genius idea to\u00a0enhance everyday headphones\u00a0by adding a one-of-a-kind listening experience to the device. They sold like hotcakes. Everyone who is someone has a pair of\u00a0Beats by Dre<\/em><\/a>. Then, Apple got in on the action and the rest is history.<\/span>

There’s word he even has a\u00a0sitcom in the works on NBC<\/a>. It’s safe to say Packer won 2014 in film.<\/span>

\n<\/span>2014 felt like the 90’s all over again. This is evident in several music reunions of the stage. Where to begin? Brandy, Yo-Yo, MC Lyte and Queen Latifah hit the\u00a02014 \u00a0Hip Hop Awards\u00a0<\/em>stage to perform the 1994 hit,\u00a0I Wanna Be Down (Remix)<\/a>.<\/i>\u00a0The original Queen Bee, Missy Elliot and Da Brat killed it at the\u00a0Soul Train Music Awards.<\/em>\u00a0<\/i>And of course, we can’t forget about Jodeci’s lip syncing reunion.<\/span>
