It’s Black Women’s Equal Pay Day And You’re Still Being Underpaid

As you’re watching the time pass, ready to clock out from your 9-to-5, there are millions of Black women needing every second to count for more just to make ends meet on their next paycheck. It’s not due to a lack of skills or education, research shows women of color are not fairly compensated as their male counterparts. Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, a movement to bring attention to the wage gap for minority women.

According to Atlanta Women For Equality, Black women must work almost 19 months to make what a white man makes in 12 months. President Obama (an event I covered in April) and other lawmakers have noted the pay disparities for all women, yet it continues to be an issue that is continuously swept under the rug.

“African American women with a bachelor’s degree or more typically make $50,200—about the same as white, non-Hispanic men who have some college but lack a degree (99 cents for every dollar).”
