Yes! Ava DuVernay is Now a Barbie Doll for Girls

Barbie is making bold steps in both feminism and diversity by adding a custom Ava DuVernay doll to its 2015 Sheroes collection. DuVernay is being honored for her tenacity and inspiration to young girls. The Selma director is one of six female heroes being honored, including country music star Trisha Yearwood, actress Emma Rossum and Eva Chen, youngest appointed female Editor-in-Chief of a national fashion magazine, Lucky. Barbie will celebrate their accomplishments at the Power of Women Luncheon in New York City. After the ceremony, the women will auction off their doll to a charity of their choice.

Miss DuVernay certainly needs no introduction. 2015 has been her breakout year becoming the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes. Having the honor of a doll in her likeness should be no surprise as she is deserving of that and so much more. The doll captures Ava’s essence with her signature braids and director’s chair. One monumental step in film and now the doll industry. What will Ava do next? She continues to bring more excitement to the table.

Barbie General Manager, Evelyn Mazzocco says the dolls represent the endless possibilities for girls looking to shatter barriers and break the mold just like these everyday women. “Started by a female entrepreneur and mother, this brand has a responsibility to continue to honor and encourage powerful female role models who are leaving a legacy for the next generation of glass ceiling breakers,” Mazzocco said.

Fans can get in on the celebration via social media on National #Shero Day, Monday, April 27th. Use #Shero and #BeSuper  tagging @Barbie while showing off the women who have made monumental steps in your life.
